Rattling Noise From AC Belt Tensioner on Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Problem Description and Possible Solution

A rattling noise may develop from the AC belt tensioner. This can be caused by an internal fault with the AC compressor, AC performance may also be diminished when this occurs. Our technicians tell us that replacing the AC compressor will commonly correct this concern.

This can be potentially dangerous: while driving, the ac tensioner finally locked up and caused our ac belt to snap, taking the serpentine belt with it. Suddenly lost power steering on a busy road, with no coolant pumping or battery charging either. Had been chattering/rattling for a while beforehand, but had no idea what was causing it until now.
