No the a/c compressor is protected by a pressure switch to alow the system to transfer needed lubrication by the circulation of freeon or refrigerant. The compressor will sieze up if no lubricating oil in the cylinders. The pressure switch senses pressure, and induces magnetic field to pull in the clutch plate. So the compressor shaft can rotate!
The A/C compressor on your 2006 Chevrolet Silverado will NOT turn on when the refrigerant charge gets to low. If you need the help of a repair shop to fix this problem please use the following link to find one near you - http://repairpal.com/directory?address=49460&car_brand_names=Chevrolet.
