My air conditioner has started to produce a loud squealing noise when turned on. Running the fan alone does not cause the noise. What's the cause?

2000 Mitsubishi Montero Sport Question: air conditioner squealing
Answer #1matte July 16, 2009, 13:04Master
It likely to be related to the AC drive belt. That would be the first thing to check. An old belt can produce a squealing noise.

Could be something as simple as the a/c belt out of adjustment. Worst case scenario probably would be the a/c compressor clutch or the compressor itself going bad, which is somewhat common on these.
