I am contacting you on behalf of my mom. She only has 36,000 miles on her Buick. She took it to the dealer and they put it on the diagnostic machine and can't find anything wrong with it. Then all of the sudden it goes hot, but it doesn't seem to do it when she is at the dealer. Please advise what she can do and a reliable and fair repair shop near her that is not the dealer

Intermittent problems can be very hard to find. It sounds like one of two things. 1) The a/c compressor may not be turning on at times as a result of a poor electrical connection. 2) The temperature control door is sticking in the heat position. If the compressor is not turning on intermittently the only way to find the problem may be to have it diagnosed when it is not working. As far as the temperature door goes the first question would be, do you have separate driver and passenger temp controls. If so, do both sides go hot when the problem occurs. If only one side fails then chances are pretty good the one of the door actuators has failed. My advice would be as follows - Next time the A/c stops working drive directly to the dealer or whichever repair shop you decide on and have them check the system while the fault is present. Check the repairpal website for repair shops in your area.
