Hot air only being blown out the air ducts when the A/C is turned on is a sign of the system being low in refrigerant .Can you hear the compressor try to cycle on and off when the air conditioning is turned on with the engine running? The system will protect its self and shut off the AC if there isn't a minimum amount of refrigerant in the system. Loss of refrigerant may be due to a leak in the system that need to be investigated and repaired prior to recharging the system.
