i took it in and they said it could be a clutch in the air conditioner if not that it would need the compressor replaced. what is the estimated price for the clutch repair and would that solve the problem or replacing the compressor involves the clutch too

    The compressor is engaged and rotated through the A/C clutch. If the clutch is fully engaged, the compressor should be creating pressure. Pressure readings are needed to determine the compressor condition. The A/C clutch is electronically actuated from a relay. Unless the compressor is being rotated from the clutch, the compressor can not be condenmed until pressure readings are taken. I have to wonder why the repair facility is saying "could be".

    To throw my 2 cents in Brian -- sounds like the shop is guessing at a clutch issue, but probably would rather just replace the entire assembly...just in case...
