Question: After oil change battery dead in AM, 550 KPA pressure @1800 RPM, lower Temp 82C,

Question

Visitor, Diesel, Mission, TX, January 17, 2011, 22:05

Regular oil cange with 15w40 oil. Vehicle sat 2 days and both batteries dead. Easily started and ran normal. Dead again next morning and after starting found oil pressure while driving at 550 KPA and temperature gauge which is always just below 100 C will not go higher than 82 C.
Mechanic says that the pressure manally reads 550 and wants to do a tear down to determine the blockage. he says that driving the vehicle will blow the engine $2000 price tag without fixing the electrical problem. says they are not related

Electrically you need to have the battery charged and tested, then check the charging system is functioning correctly and finally that there is no parasitic draw or load on the battery overnight. Problems mechanical and electrically should not be related. The mechanical/oil pressure problem needs to be fixed before serious damage occurs. Was oil filter changed? Has oil regularly been changed?

The oil pressure on these engines could reach up to 100psi at cold ambient temperatures. Yours with 550kPa is equals to 80 psi, it's important to use the OE filter and match the oil to low temperatures, which is 5W40. Use the 15W40 on the summer.
Do you know if they used the OE ACDelco oil filter??
There is a TSB out from GM regarding engine problems, damage caused by incorrect or poorly manufactured oil filters. :

Engine - Noise/Damage Oil Filter Application Importance

    INFORMATION

    Bulletin No.: 07-06-01-016B

    Date: July 27, 2009

Subject: Information on Internal Engine Noise or Damage After Oil Filter Replacement
    Models:
2010 and Prior Passenger Cars and Trucks (Including Saturn)
    2010 and Prior HUMMER H2, H3
    2009 and Prior Saab 9-7X

    Supercede:
This bulletin is being updated to add model years. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 07-06-01-016A (Section 06 - Engine/Propulsion System).

    Important
Engine damage that is the result of an incorrect or improperly installed engine oil filter is not a warrantable claim. The best way to avoid oil filter quality concerns is to purchase ACDelco(R) oil filters directly from GMSPO.

Oil filter misapplication may cause abnormal engine noise or internal damage. Always utilize the most recent parts information to ensure the correct part number filter is installed when replacing oil filters. Do not rely on physical dimensions alone. Counterfeit copies of name brand parts have been discovered in some aftermarket parts systems. Always ensure the parts you install are from a trusted source. Improper oil filter installation may result in catastrophic engine damage.

Refer to the appropriate Service Information (SI) installation instructions when replacing any oil filter and pay particular attention to procedures for proper cartridge filter element alignment. If the diagnostics in SI (Engine Mechanical) lead to the oil filter as the cause of the internal engine noise or damage, dealers should submit a field product report. Refer to Corporate Bulletin Number 02-00-89-002I (Information for Dealers on How to Submit a Field Product Report).

Here is another TSB for the Duramax Diesel:

Diesel Engine - Correct Oil Viscosity & Oil Filter Usage

    File In Section: 06 - Engine/Propulsion System

    Bulletin No.: 00-06-01-025A

    Date: September, 2001

    INFORMATION
    Subject:
Correct Oil Viscosity and Oil Filter Usage for the Duramax 6600 Diesel Engine (RPO LB7)

    Models:

2001-2002 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 2500 HD and 3500 Models with 6.6L Engine (VIN 1 - RPO LB7)

This bulletin is being revised to add the AC Delco oil filter part number and add the 2002 Model Year. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 00-06-01-025 (Section 06 - Engine/Propulsion System).
Important :The Duramax 6600 diesel engine can produce oil pressures over 690 kPa (100 psi) during a cold start condition and the oil pressure gauge may remain near 552 kPa (80 psi) while driving. Because of these oil pressures, it is important that the correct oil filter is used and torqued properly and the proper oil viscosity is used for the ambient temperatures.

    Oil Filter

The correct oil filter for use on the Duramax 6600 engine is the AC PF2232 or the production oil filter, GM P/N 97214983. This filter was designed specifically for use on the Duramax 6600 engine and incorporates improved filtering capabilities as well as an integral oil pressure relief valve. The oil filter should be torqued to 24 N.m (18 lb ft) to prevent leaks under high pressure conditions.

Oil Viscosity for Cold Weather Operation

SAE 5W-40 viscosity oil designated as API CH-4 or CG-4 should be used if the ambient temperature falls below -18°C (0°F) to prevent excessive oil pressure on a cold start. Refer to the Owner's Manual diesel supplement for additional information on proper oil usage for other operating conditions.

    Parts Information:
    Oil Filter P/N:
    97214983
    Production P/N ( ACDelco P/N):
    AC PF 2232
