Did either of the shops tell you why the A/C isn't working? Is the refrigerant leaking out?
The smell may be leaking refrigerant from the evaporator, which can be difficult to access and check, but if it's leaking bad enough to smell it, then it should be pretty easy to determine if it's leaking with a leak detector.

    Dear Bret Bodas
Thanks for the reply. I took the car to the third mechanic who was the a specialist in Mercedes Benz . He hooked up the car to the computer and reset the control buttons. He also put half a pound of freon in the system and recharged it
IN the system check it said that the evaporator sensor was faulty and the refrigent is too low. But refrigrint was only slightly lower. He did not change the evaporator sensor also
I am not sure if the previous two mechanics had all the tools to reset the control after recharge. Both mechanics could not detect a leak nor did the third mechanic say there was
