Once I get the car into gear, it runs fine -- does not stall. Happens about 2-3 times per week.

If it only happens when cold, it is classic example of the idle air control motor being carbon fouled and sticking open. I have had great success taking off the air induction boot removing the two screws that secure the IAC and cleaning the motor while turning its spindle. Dealer always replaces them call an independent Toyota repair shop and see if they have experienced the problem and do they clean or automatically replace the IAC valve.

Reply (more info) to Patrick: (Thanks much for your response.) Car stays in a garage overnight (Fountain Valley, CA - 8 miles inland from beach). Some nights have been cool, other nights high 50's - low 60's. Still had problem sometimes when starting in mid-afternoon when warmer. Is it possible the cool night temps still affect starting the next afternoon?
