First make sure your engine oil level is OK. Its hard to guess what is causing a "noise" without hearing the noise fist hand. Is this noise heard most when you fully floor the accelerator pedal from rest, if so this could be "pinging" due to poor fuel and would go away the moment you let off the accelerator pedal. A knocking sound in the engine could be caused by lack of lubrication which would be a lot more serious (and expensive). Has your engine oil pressure light ever come on or do you frequently have to top up your engine oil level?

I have this same problem. Everytime I come to a stop at a traffic light and accelerate, I have to accelerate very slow and steady for a few moments, ease off the gas then continue to accelerate like nothing ever happened. Can't avoid the "knocking noise" along with vibrations coming from under the car. (big problem when I'm in traffic on the freeway) I was told it could be a driveshaft problem. Something that has to do with the universal joint or bearings worn out or having the the driveshaft re-balanced or even replaced...any suggestions or advice?

Cheak your aligment screws if they are tight enough
