Have gotten and paid for two diagnosis on 1994 BMW 318i: #1 replaced freon. A/C worked but on and off. #1 referred to A/C specialist who thought the problem to be evaporator. #2 ruled out evaporator and has referred to electrical specialist. Can't find sensor for clock and sunroof. Could this be a clue to overall problem?

    Really you need to find a good Diagnostic shop. Sensor for the Clock and Sunroof? I have NO idea what this has to do with an A/C Diagnosis a on a 318 and I used to work in a BMW shop.
    You need an Air Conditioning System and Climate Control Diagnosis. Here is an article to help you or the shop with that process.

    Thanks a lot! I have decided to take it to BMW. Should have done it already. Didn't want to go 100 miles from home.
